Bangkok is sinking 1-2cm a year due to the weight of all its buildings pressing down on a highly compactible clay base, from which the groundwater is being steadily drained. If we were to examine all the high-rise buildings that have been erected over the past years in terms of their design or engineering there would be little to criticise. The problem lies elsewhere - in the siting of these huge and heavy structures.

When I travel to Bangkok, and look at the new high-rises being built, I am often led to compare these buildings to opinions. Impressive arguments can be built up, step by step, each step of logic following on faultlessly from the last. But if there is a fault in them, it is often not be found in the design or the engineering of the argument itself, but in the base on which it stands.

At a time when there is so much attachment to views and opinions; we should regularly examine the underlying beliefs - unproven or unproveable - on which they are founded. Ask: 'What am I taking for granted?' 'What are they taking for granted?'
