Giving, sharing, performing acts of kindness with no thought of reward: this is the foundation of the Buddhist path.

Kind, generous acts and words gradually cleanse the mind of the poison of self-concern. They change the way we look at others, and they change the way we look at ourselves. Loneliness and alienation fade away. The perceptions, 'I am a giver, I have something to give', 'I make a difference in my world through give', bring joy and stability to the mind.

The unwise seek happiness through accumulation, motivated by a deep irrational belief that it will protect them from death. The wise seek happiness through giving, based upon a rational conviction that culitvating a habit of non-attachment propels them onto the path to the deathless.
